I am the luckiest man alive.
When I was younger I was told to ‘have fun, show respect, be present and live your own life’. I managed to spend my youth in a van with my best mates, touring the country in a DIY rock n roll band. After that dream ended in my late 20’s I somehow arsed my way onto the dark side and became an office monkey for an independent record label. During that time I ran side projects, some successful, most not. I married my long-time partner, had 2 beautiful kids, travelled relentlessly and ‘lived my life’. The one consistent thing through the journey was my love for the ocean and the constant calling it brings. It didn’t matter where we were on tour, where the office was located or where we took the kids on holidays, surfing was at the front of the decision making. Now in my mid 30’s, very happy and very present, the ocean still calls on a daily basis but so does the creative urge to do more. Enter Rory.
Rory comes from a family of shapers and has had the planer in hand for over 16 years. Rory has a knack of listening, calculating, then doing. He never truly gives his opinion until there is something tangible to discuss, a real ‘actions speak louder’ type.
During one of my failed attempts at a business, I had approached Rory about collaboratively making boards but under a different name. Some concepts were thrown around but nothing really stuck until my 93 year old grandfather got sick.
‘Papa’ introduced me to the ocean at a young age through the lens of him being a shipwright. His whole life was the ocean, his respect, passion and trust for the sea was so inspiring. Papa passed in the thick of Covid restrictions and that re ignited something for me. ‘Have fun, show respect, be present and live your own life’. This rang true and the name Goes To Sea was born.
Rory and I re visited old shapes. We tested, pushed, reverted and pivoted until we were happy (more on that soon) but we wanted to dive into why we are doing this. The answer; we both need a space to creatively work with shapes, sounds, colours, textures and imagery.
We both seek the moments outside of ‘perfection’
Individual thinking that eventually needs collaboration.
Goes To Sea right there in a nutshell.
Welcome.
