Working with Rory on this board was almost the easiest part of the 3181 project. We had our usual back and forth on shape and function, but a part from that it was smooth sailing. A shortboard that can drive, allow flow and also offer control when its start to pump, job done so to speak.
The hardest part has been articulating how I feel about leaving Prahran, a place that has given me so much and asked for nothing in return. I have lived in the area for the past 17 years, but the time has come to head back to the coast.
Once the idea for the 3181 was set, I almost instantly couldn't take a photo or write a word, I had a mental block that I couldn't navigate through and I needed help! I didn't want to attempt a history lesson and I definitely didn't want to offer a 'guide' to the area, I wanted to deliver something real and unique to the story telling. I have to give my wife full credit here, but one afternoon when I was whinging as usual, she turned to me and said why don't you do a podcast, maybe you could get the words out better that way?
Almost instantly I was calling, texting, DMing people who I admire in the area telling them about this idea of naming a surfboard after the postcode of Prahran and would they be keen to be interviewed for the project?
Lucky for me everyone said yes and off we went.
Fast forward a couple of months and we have a pretty bloody good board,
5 interviews done, intro music recorded, a release schedule, social campaign, pre orders, stickers and a clear head to move onto the next thing, whatever that may be.
If you would like to pre order a board, just pick your dims, use the code PREORDER at checkout, pay the 10% deposit and we will get down to business. Whilst we hand shape your new ride from start to finish right here in Victoria, why don't you listen to the interview series on your favourite podcast provider?
